I always wondered when I would officially become an artist. I was taught that you couldn’t assign yourself a title so to speak unless you earned money doing it. So when I won a scholarship to Florence, Italy to study art for three years I reasoned that was worth a pretty good amount of money and therefore I was legit.
As it worked out I never did go to Italy, but I worked as a graphic artist for a small print shop that offered design services. Mostly I did wedding invitations and military pamphlets. Making money as a graphic designer I never felt less like an artist. I turned my attention to technology and worked my way up to a junior systems engineer for a prestigious boutique print shop in central NY.
It was during this time that I realized being an artist had nothing to do with the money. I was an artist because I really couldn’t figure out anything not involving some sort of creative process that let loose all the crazy ideas running around in my head. Money had nothing to do with it. I simply wasn’t right if I were not making music or art. So it turned out I was an artist afterall.
I am going to talk about art here. My art, inspirational art, any art at all really. I can’t help it, it’s what I do.
